Daily Inspiration: Offshore wind and head high surf in Orange County

A sunbeam sneaks its way through a crack in your window shade, the air has a crisp backwards feeling to it.  As you walk your usual path to check the surf, you realize today’s early morning routine is a little different.  In a good way.

Beauty Buzz: OC Brow Queen Jennifer Hyland shares her beauty secrets

January 31st, 2012, 2:36 pm by

by Jennifer Le / orangecounty.com   With the New Year and a new look, who wouldn’t want to fall into the spring season looking fabulous?  I stopped by Corona del Mar’s Primp Make-Up Lounge to get some inside tips and tricks from Orange County’s renowned makeup artist Jennifer Hyland.

The sought-after beauty trend donning the runways and red carpet this spring: red-coral lips paired with a fresh face.  Primp Make-Up Lounge’s “Saucy” lipstick is the faultless mixture of rich red and cool coral tones – perfect for offsetting a barely there face.

Well, almost perfect.  Also hot this season are clean brows.

However thick or thin, clean eyebrows are what balance the face.  Not only do eyebrows define the facial bone structure, but also they provide a natural frame for the face.  “Your brows are important facial features and if they’re done correctly, it makes, not breaks your makeup application,” said Hyland.  Well-shaped and cleaned eyebrows can also make you look more youthful with or without makeup.

With 18 years of makeup artistry under her belt and a knack for perfecting eyebrows, Hyland is dubbed as the “OC Brow Queen.”  Hyland uses the meticulous technique of tweezing to shape the brow structure rather than using hot wax, which can be very harsh.  Not only is hot wax abrasive, but also it can burn the sensitive skin around the eyes and pull more hair strands than intended.

Always on-the-go or simply don’t have time in the morning?  Hyland shared a quick tip to making your I-had-the-best-sleep-of-my-life look last all day.  Lightly line a white base pencil under your brows to not only to define the arch and makes the white of your eye look brighter, but it also “gives you the illusion of wearing eye shadow.”  Plus it doesn’t become or look cakey.

Free of the Flock …Lost International Boho Chic

January 18th, 2012, 1:30 pm by

Story by Jennifer Le.  Video by Scott Bagley.

Lost International is set to release its new boho-chic Black Sheep line of clothing aimed at young women who want to make a fashion statement.

Irvine-based #madeinoc brand …Lost International has come a long way since founders Matt Biolos shaped surfboards and Mike Reola made t-shirts for their friends during the early 90’s in San Clemente, CA.  Known as one of the leading manufacturers of surf and skate apparel and products across the world, …Lost is now shedding away from the junior image of board shorts and t-shirts to don a more mature vision with its new women’s line Black Sheep.

Like …Lost’s simple premise of not being lost in the flock of mainstream sports, but rather immersed in the surf and skate-driven lifestyle, Black Sheep will not be lost in the flock of contemporary fashions.

Where classic meets current and vintage musters innovation, Black Sheep offers the fashions of the 1960’s and 70’s through the lens of 2012 – aka “boho-chic.”  …Lost’s Head Designer of Women’s Wear Rachel Anne Rainwater says she gets her inspiration from high-end European runways and turns it into everyday wear “for the black sheep in each of us.”

With femininity and “pretty” in and get-out-of-my-way body-con dresses out, Black Sheep’s debut couldn’t have come at a better time.  Inspired by art and nature, the spring/summer collection features laid-back looks of tie-dyed leathers, treated corduroys, and floaty lightweight dresses and tops – all made to fit the female form and be worn with discretion.

According to …Lost Co-Founder and in-house rock star Matt Biolos, Black Sheep’s “influence is different from and outside of surf – it’s for women who are not afraid to stand out and are not following in line with the herd or flock.”  As for the Black Sheep line, it too strives to stand out.  …Lost CEO Joel Cooper wanted the line to separate itself from cheap-chic retailers such as H&M and Forever 21.  Not only does the line feature higher-quality fabrics and meticulously placed details of treatment, lace and buttons, but Black Sheep will only be sold in Orange County, Los Angeles and across the nation in boutiques such as Lulu*s, Dungarees and L.A. Attitude.

Though the year has just begun and the warm weather months away, some of us are already fantasizing what our wardrobe will be throughout 2012.  We had the pleasure of also getting a sneak-peek of Black Sheep’s 2012 Fall Collection, which features a more classic and mod feel with bold color blocking silks and the mixture of hard with soft leathers, knits and crochets.  Imagine Jackie O., but at Woodstock.

Catching up with the Krochet Kids Intl

January 13th, 2012, 1:52 pm by

We stopped by Krochet Kids International to catch up with the CEO & Co-founder, Kohl Crecelius, to see what they have been up to in their new warehouse.  Some may recognize them from their bing commercial that recently aired around the country.

Needless to say they’ve come a long way from since their humble beginnings all they way back in Spokane Washington in 2007.

What’s more rad than a group of cool guys that know how to crochet?  What about if they crocheted for a cause?  With an awesome cause and an empowering mission, Krochet Kids international (KKi) continues to grow as an authentic nonprofit organization in Orange County.

Kohl Crecelius, Stewart Ramsey and Travis Hartanov started crocheting their own headwear for the mountains and selling their masterpieces to their friends and anyone who would buy them.  It was their local newspaper that dubbed them as the “Krochet Kids.”

We had the pleasure of checking out KKi’s new warehouse in Costa Mesa to catch up with the Krochet Kids on their projects, pickleball and what’s next for 2012.

Their Krochet program began years ago in the war-torn country of Northern Uganda with 10 women.  The Krochet Program is now working with 150 women in Uganda and Peru.  Their ultimate mission?  “To empower people to rise above poverty.”

“Offering a job to these women is only one aspect of our cause,” says CEO and co-founder Kohl Crecelius, “We do not employ people forever, but we give them the tools to grow.”  The Krochet Program also offers financial literacy such as savings and budgeting and one-on-one mentorship, all done by local Ugandan counselors.

According to Kohl, he is fortunate to be so close to other like-minded brands in Orange County like Volcom, who recently joined forces with them earlier this year.  The collaboration includes a limited line of t-shirts and hats that continue to provide help to Northern Ugandan communities.

This past summer, KKi has also reached out to 10 women in Lima, Peru where like Uganda, is overwhelmed with people that lack the education and experience to find quality work.  Because knitting and textiles, such as alpaca, have been a staple in the Peruvian culture, KKi’s impact will “offer immediate assistance and the steps toward a brighter future.”

Now at their new warehouse, Kohl and the rest of the Krochet Kids crew has a bigger space and bigger plans.  For their spring 2012 line, KKi is branching out beyond hats with headbands and bowties.  As for the bigger space, they brought down a tradition from the northwest: Pickleball.  The game pickleball is a combination of a small version of tennis with a big version of ping-pong.

Give the gift of love this holiday season.  Not only can you buy a hat (or one of their many other products) to change a life, but each hat also has the unique feature of a hand-signed name by the woman who made it.

Because hats are seasonal accessories (with the exception of Orange County where hats are worn year round), the holiday season at Krochet Kid international’s warehouse is busy but like “the perfect storm.”

Hey, at least they can de-stress with a game of pickleball.
